Schoolhouse 2.2
Today I released Schoolhouse 2.2, an update that is long overdue. This update fixes compatibility problems that have cropped up in the latest Leopard updates, as well as some other outstanding issues. Along with bug fixes, Classcasting has been removed. Your library should upgrade just fine, and if you have any issues feel free to contact me and I’ll try to help. I realize I’ve been particularly silent on Schoolhouse (as well as my blog) for three weeks shy of a year now. I can only ask my readers and users that you forgive me. I am working my way back to my projects and am continuing to work on the future of Schoolhouse. I’ll keep you posted.

Awesome! I’ve found ways to workaround all my issues, but it’s great to not have to workaround, and to hear that you haven’t abandoned Schoolhouse. Any chance we can hear the current state of version 3?

(Sorry for the mistakes) I waited an update for a long time ago. Thank you to continuing the developpement of this soft!
Posted by: Hubcube | February 6th, 2009 18:32
Awesome! Thanks! I was just trying to decide if I was going to continue using Schoolhouse next semester since of the bugs in Leopard, but you came to the rescue. Much appreciated.

Hey thanks for the update!
Whats about other languages?
Posted by: rakede | February 6th, 2009 18:47
Wow! Incredible! I thought I would never see this day. Welcome back and many thanks Logan. It’s difficult to describe how I feel. It’s been a year of checking your website weekly, if not multiple times in one day. Bless you for continuing work on Schoolhouse. I look forward to a bright future for Schoolhouse.

My library upgraded just fine, and it’s great to see this app is still being developed. I’m looking forward to 3.0!

Dude, thank you so much for coming back! I thought you had died. I’m pretty excited to see what’s next!
Posted by: Rick | February 6th, 2009 20:00
This is great! Now I can run it natively on my Intel Mac. Thanks!
Posted by: Jack | February 6th, 2009 21:15
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you!!
Posted by: Gassia | February 6th, 2009 21:29
Wow! This isn’t the grandiose 3.0 that I had been waiting for for a year, but I’m glad you’re still alive! I’m graduating in May so probably won’t get use out of a potential 3.0 release, but I’m really glad that this software is back in development after being AWOL for so long. Seriously, this is one of the apps (now that it’s functional again) that makes switching to the mac so tempting. That being said, I hope that, should you decide to abandon this software in the future, you pass it on to someone else because it’s just too good to be wasted.
I take back the mean things I said on macupdate.

I hate to be a stickler, but there’s one pretty annoying bug. Any time I make a change to an assignment, Schoolhouse jumps back up to the first course listed. Aside from that, looks like it’s working beautifully!
Posted by: Kevin | February 6th, 2009 22:50
Yay! I’ve been hopefully waiting for this for about a year now—so excited to see it come out!
Posted by: Lily | February 7th, 2009 10:30
You should add an option to post your article on severals platforms like facebooks , digg … i’m certain it ‘ll make you software more famous !
Posted by: Mikeshake | February 7th, 2009 12:17
I second Kevin’s comment, I have that problem too. If you try to enter a new assignment in a course, it jumps to the first course listed, and if you try to change it in the side pane, the assignment disappeared. I also seem to have lost the ability to drag and drop courses between terms. The workaround for the previously mentioned issue that I came up with was to create a term called “Temp” and every time I wanted to edit an assignment I would drag the course to Temp and edit it there and then drag it back, but drag and drop seems to have completely stopped working.
Posted by: Samantha | February 7th, 2009 12:34
I second Kevin’s bug report, it always switches back to the first course in a term. But it’s still a lot better than the previous bug I was having, where I couldn’t select the 2nd or 3rd course in a term at all, only the 1st.
Great to see a update for this software!

Hello. I am having issues launching the new version. Any tips? Rosetta did not help.
Posted by: Mike | February 7th, 2009 13:16
I’m am so excited. Just to let you know, I installed Leopard 10.0.0 in VMware Fusion just to run school house. Thank you so much for making a triumphant return. Schoolhouse 3 is my most anticipated software release I’ve ever experienced. Thank you for taking the time Logan.
Posted by: Andrew Parker | February 7th, 2009 14:31
Awesome, I’m thrilled to see this continue development.
Posted by: Kirkafur | February 7th, 2009 16:19
Opps. I mean 10.5.0 of course.
Posted by: Andrew Parker | February 7th, 2009 16:19
Thank you….Thank You!
You have no idea how much I love this program. It is simply the best school planner program in the world. The best part is that it is free.
I started using Schoolhouse 1.1 back in Fall of 2006 when I was in my 3rd year of college. It was much better than any school planner out there. Then Schoolhouse 2 came out in Feb 2007 and I was amazed at how a good app could become better. Unfortunately, there were some bugs, but they were not detrimental. Then Schoolhouse 2.1 came out in April 2007 and it fixed the problems, which proved to me that this was the program I would stay with. Then last year (Feb 2008) about this time I freaked out because Schoolhouse stopped working and I had no idea what program I would use. I downloaded a bunch of school planning software and they ended up being lame or trial software…and I didn’t have any money, I was a college student. Then I found your blog and you gave us a quick fix by running the program in Rosetta. This allowed me to keep the program for my last semester of college.
Now I am in graduate school working on my Masters degree. This past month or so, Schoolhouse stopped working. It was extremely buggy and I tried everything I could to get it to work. I failed at that and I needed a program to help me with this semester’s classes. I searched for programs again, all the while keeping Schoolhouse so that when an update came out, I would be ready. Finally, I found a temporary fix, Assignment Planner. It wasn’t perfect, but it would do for now…then a screen popped up saying that it was a trial and I needed to pay to get the full version. I was angry and immediately trashed the app. Then I found TaskList…it was lame, but it would do because I have homework due soon. Then I found out that I could Import from TaskList into Schoolhouse, so that way it would be easy to transition back when an update came out. I was partly relieved.
Today, Sat. Feb 7, I inserted all my assignments into TaskList. Then, I thought…”maybe Schoolhouse will work fine if I import my files from TaskList.” So then I opened Schoolhouse, while it was opening, I thought…”that would be awesome if Schoolhouse was updated this semester.”
THEN…
Schoolhouse opened and a window popped up that said that there was A NEW UPDATE AVAILABLE!!! I immediately freaked out and it was one of the most amazing feelings that I have felt all week.
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate Schoolhouse and what you are doing. Thank you for your hard work and giving the world a free program.
Schoolhouse is definitely a step into the unimaginable.
Posted by: James | February 7th, 2009 16:21
We love you man! Just in time for my new School Year, it has been god’s gift to me as I now have an excuse to use my computer for every subject! You are a complete Champ.
I would love to see some sort of timetable that would open up in regards to the lessons you set- I would most definitely use this feature a lot. I would also love to see duplicating courses to add them to the next term. I would be more than happy to discuss some updates and then pay you to add them into the thing via a donation of some sort; I am more than happy to pay for a product that will organise me so awesomely for the entire year so that everybody could reap the benefits. Let me know if you’re interested, you have my email from this comment
Posted by: Harley | February 7th, 2009 20:47
Wow! I second all of the above comments. Can’t wait to hear more!
Posted by: Justin | February 7th, 2009 21:49
Wow, I had completely given up hope for an update to Schoolhouse, and was even considering moving to iProcrastinate, though I like the Schoolhouse interface MUCH better, and overall the program feels much more professional.
Good to see you resuming work on this progress, Logan. I made a donation – something I’ve done for only a few projects – in the hope that you will continue work on Schoolhouse. There really is no other software like it on any OS, so I’d hate to see development die off.
Very much looking forward to 3.0.

*resuming work on this PROJECT.
Posted by: Mark | February 7th, 2009 22:29
By the way Logan, any chance of an iPhone version which can sync over wireless?
Posted by: Mark | February 7th, 2009 22:41
I third Kevin’s bug report where it resets the display. Really Annoying!!!!!
but fantastic software anyway….really appreciate what you are doing with it.
But one really good quick feature is to have universal “kinds”(assignment, lab, quiz etc). This would be really good to add extra events to all courses(such as homework).
Any way many thanks!

I love the new version as well. Except for the refresh bug. Every time I change almost anything it jumps back to the first course.
Love that it works though.

After a long search of the internet, 3-4 hours of a software that will get the job done like School house and it’s extensive capabilities… the pump is dry. The only thing was a combination of softwares which by FAR DID NOT even come close to Schoolhouse ( ‘SH’ ), even iProcrastinate does not even come close. If finance is a motivation, hell I would spend a good chunk for this software.

This is my favorite day ever. Seriously you have made me SO happy. I love Schoolhouse!!

Hey Logan, thanks a lot for the update. The bugfixes are fantastic. Awesome that you are resuming development! Great project, I’m looking forward to 3.0!

Does anyone have trouble adding Notes and Assignments? If i were to add a assignment under a course, it redirects it to the top of the list ( the top course on the list ).
Posted by: Zach | February 9th, 2009 22:47
Great to see you’re alive!
In the interlude since the previous version stopped functioning for me, I actually purchased Assignment Planner and attempted to use it instead – but I had terrible luck and got my data completely wiped out twice by some sort of bug.
Glad to see Schoolhouse back in the game.
Posted by: MiG | February 9th, 2009 23:49
While I don’t hope for one, a syncable iphone counterpart would be awesome.
A few other ideas, which may not be feasible…
a dashboard widget which can reflect a smart notebook (or menu bar item)
ability to export an assignment to ical
and a separate category for miscellaneous “tasks” to be put into the mix not connected to a specific assignment.
Smart notebooks own. I’ve yet to see this replicated elsewhere.

Notifications was the last one that I couldn’t think of.
Just some ideas.

Posted by: Nick | February 12th, 2009 09:20
thanks a lot man, great job….just a suggestion for schoolhouse 3…someone mentioned being compatible with facebook i was thinking blackboard too, instead of the classcasts u used in the last version, blackboard is very popular online tool universities are using for blogs and wikis, and integration with schoolhouse would be amazing…again, great job and thanks a lot
Posted by: dan | February 12th, 2009 09:21
Blackboard support would be amazing indeed, but I don’t think it’s likely to happen, it’s all based on Java… anyway, I’m looking forward to getting the classcasts back.
Posted by: tobogan | February 12th, 2009 12:41
Not sure how popular this would be, but my college uses a service called Moodle.
Posted by: Kirkafur | February 13th, 2009 11:54
Thank you so much! Also, to those who can’t open simply run it using Rosetta (”Get Info”, open using Rosetta). That has worked for me! This is the best homework manager. Through all the bugs, I have always done everything I could to keep it working. This program is what keeps me from going insane during the semester. You are awesome! And it is Freeware. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Posted by: Sam | February 13th, 2009 14:52
Keep up the good work, looking forward to Schoolhouse 3
Posted by: Cooper | February 13th, 2009 20:37
Awesome!! I found school house last year before I started my freshman year in college and really wanted to download it. However, I saw that there would be some potential bugs so I held off. Now there’s nothing stopping me! Thank you!!
Can’t wait to see schoolhouse 3!
Posted by: Tessa Mortenson | February 15th, 2009 12:57
First I want to thank you for creating such an incredibly helpful program, it makes my life a little easier.
Know lets go to the bugs
, I am having problems when renaming a Kind, here is an example of what happens:
1. When you make a new course you get some default kinds like:
Lab
Midterm
Quiz
2. So if I want to rename them I double click in Lab and change it
1er Parcial
Mideterm
Quiz
3. Then when I’m done I double click on mideterm to change it too but it just copy the name i just give to the last item:
1er Parcial
1er Parcial
Quiz
4. And the same thing thing keeps happening and I cannot set the kinds I want, same happens with the percentage, and I end with
1er parcial
1er parcial
1er parcial
1er parcial
1er parcial
5. I start to get mad
, thanks hope you can help me.

i’ll add to my list of requests: a gradesheet view. with all the features that schoolhouse offers and the ability to keep track of grades\gpa, i think it’s kind of strange that there’s no way to quickly see all of your grades. this could be a view all on its own, or it could simply be a grade column in the current list view.
Posted by: Kev | February 16th, 2009 02:29
For sure, great work.
Hope you can do something about this bug though, makes it a horrible task to edit anything about the assignments in courses.
Looking forward to Schoolhouse 3.

Posted by: meme | February 24th, 2009 07:19
Well, welcome back! I thought Schoolhouse had been abandoned, but kept checking your site JUST in case. No joke, I’ve not yet upgraded to Leopard just so I can be sure Schoolhouse keeps running.
I’d love to see an iPhone version as well, but heck, just to see that there’s an update is enough for me for now. Thank you SO much!
Posted by: Lise | February 24th, 2009 10:12
Dommage que ce logiciel soit pas en multilingue, comme en francais.
Posted by: Kestia André Ayivi-Togbassa | February 28th, 2009 08:46
Awesome! I’m having the same jumping problem as some of the other users mentioned. And the ability to backup the database seems to have moved/disappeared.
Regardless, I don’t know how I would get through school without Schoolhouse. My first semester of college (Fall 07) was rough, but I really give your app credit for making it go much smoother.
I’m in my 4th semester and I’m still using your app and plan to use it for the rest of my academic career. As others said, I’ve come to a point where I couldn’t be a student without it.
Good luck with 3.0 development. An iPhone tie-in would be awesome, but what you have already is golden.
Thank you so much for putting your time and effort into Schoolhouse, and keep up the amazing work.
Thank, again, for the update.

Kind regards from germany,

I used schoolhouse for the first time last semester (fall 08) and it was a godsend. When I tried to set up my spring semester schedule this year I found that it had almost entirely stopped working, and I was worried that my grades this semester would slip because I couldn’t find a good task management program to replace Schoolhouse. But thanks to this update, I can keep using it.
However, I’m getting the same bug where it jumps back to the first listed course when I try to edit an assignment. This is really annoying since I like to view by one course at a time, but my workaround is to just use the whole-term view and sort by course. Plus the whole program just runs very slowly… there seems to be a significant amount of lag between pressing any button and seeing a reaction on the screen. It’s fractions of a second, but it’s still enough to be frustrating.
If these two issues were resolved Schoolhouse would be an absolutely PERFECT application, but even as it is now it’s definitely my among the best applications I’ve ever used. Thank you so much for all your hard work, and I can’t wait for the next time I see the “New Version Available” notice!
Posted by: Connor | March 3rd, 2009 14:37

I am eternally grateful for this update. This semester has actually resulted in worse grades because I used to be so dependent on Schoolhouse to keep track of my assignments that I kept forgetting them this semester. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don’t even need a Schoolhouse v3 if this one will work through all of Apple’s inane Leopard updates. Here’s to praying that Cupertino won’t botch up your software!

This powerful tool is a gem !
However, I agree with Radeke, translations would be more than welcome.
Hence I offer my help to translate to french.
Still, thanks for SchoolHouse !

Thank you! That is a very nice software!
Posted by: Filipe Guimarães | April 17th, 2009 14:47
Very nice!
I was going to use last quarter but Leopard 10.5 broke it!
Anyway, i’ve updated to the newest version and tried creating some courses.
Editing a course DOESN’T work.
The setup of this program is very nice, but i’m afraid there are some bugs which make it pratically useless…
update soon, please?
I’m 3 weeks into my quarter and now is about the perfect time to add assignments, and grades to schoolhouse. A week from now it would take too long and not be worth it….
Also, a strong web-based version of this software makes a lot of sense… if only i had time.

I hate to be a stickler, but there’s one pretty annoying bug. Any time I make a change to an assignment, Schoolhouse jumps back up to the first course listed. Aside from that, looks like it’s working beautifully!
I had the same issue! Please fix it! By the way, I cant wait for 3.0!
Posted by: Flintr | April 23rd, 2009 09:47
A quick fix to the annoying “jump to first course” bug is to Edit the course of interest and insert an asterisk before its name. This makes it the first course in the term, and you can happily make edits and add assignments until you’re done.
Posted by: Ritchell | April 29th, 2009 10:43
Thanks for providing the fix to great software. It is one of the few apps that I always have open.
I am looking forward to future releases (3.0), but have to ask something that probably has been discussed many times before. Do you plan on releasing the source to public?
There are many of us out there, I am sure, that are willing to contribute to this project. Whether it be small fixes or even features. It will help the project evolve faster and much further than you can imagine.
Thanks again!
Posted by: Daniel Morrow | May 11th, 2009 22:21
As much as I like this program, the ONE bug that seems everyone has is the most annoying thing that stops me from using this any more. “editing an item and having it disappear since the bug causes itself to select the top object”
I do not see how if Logan uses this software himself that he would leave it with such a bug because this would annoy him too.
I dont care that there might be some easy work around. its not easy when you have to change things to something they are not
I just think that it would be an easy fix! and that 2.2.1 should have been out the day after 2.2 was released or at least by now.
Posted by: Greg | May 21st, 2009 02:55
To Greg-
Are you in school trying to succeed in your classes and have a life?
Because if you were, you would understand Logan’s situation and you wouldn’t be complaining like a spoiled brat! You should be happy that you have a working copy of Schoolhouse, even if it does have a few bugs.
Do you know what the worst part is?
Logan is providing this program for FREE!!! And you are complaining that your FREE program is not doing exactly what you want.
If you are going to act that that, then why don’t you fix the bugs yourself and release your own 2.2.1!!!
Based on the context of this situation, you should have released your own fix a day after you wrote your comment! You didn’t, so stop complaining.
I could understand if you and the others complaining here PAID for the program, because then that would be a customer service problem. But, you didn’t pay for the program – all you had to do is make a few clicks on your mouse to get the program.
To Logan,
I would like to apologize for all the spoiled brats on this comment section who are not being understanding of your situation. If they were actually trying to succeed in school and have a life like we are, they would be more understanding and grateful. On behalf of all of us who are understanding and appreciative of you: Thank you for all your hard work. Your work is definitely a step into the unimaginable.
Posted by: James | June 4th, 2009 09:26
James.. get a life!
PAID.. do u see the “Make a Donation” link on the page . Because i did, and i used it. So you can take your small minded insults and do something constructive with yourself.
Comments like mine and others are there for other people to read and understand the use or unlessness of something. They are not there for you to assume you know what I did and then put your two cents worth in, when in fact you know nothing!
so you can take your few clicks, didnt pay, and apology and shove it. And unless you personally know Logan you can not comment for him either about his situation
So the next time you feel the need to post and make yourself out to be some saint apologizing and shit, maybe you should make a donation, since you must have just done a few clicks and use the FREE software and are happy being grateful for some buggy software which doesnt seem to be supported much these days, as there has been no import even here by Logan.

Is there any way for you to predict if you will continue the development of Schoolhouse? I used it a few semesters ago and I plan to use it in this upcoming semester, too and I’d like to know if you will continue developing or if its a dead end? I’d be happy if you would continue, I like using it! Thank you for your efforts!

An interesting side effect of installing OS 10.6 is that a major glitch seems to be fixed. Namely, I can now select, edit, and create new assignments in courses without the selection reverting to the first course in that term. This is great news for usability and makes the $29 jump to Snow Leopard all the more appealing.

Glad to see that development is still continuing. This is one of the few class management systems I keep coming back to. I’ve tried other apps for both my laptop and my BlackBerry, nothing compares.
While this isn’t 3.0, I’m glad to see that there are still signs of life here. It’s kind of a pity that this will be my last year using it for homework.
Re: Ritchell – That’s awesome! Now I can have a little less trepidation about installing Snow Leopard.

I am having trouble with schoolhouse on Snow Leopard. I open the program and it bounces on my dock for a minute and then disappears. Any ideas/suggestions?
